Dear Friend | Newsletter #8

Dear Friends and Family,

I hope this finds you well or at least okay!  I wanted to let you know a few things going on over here related to writing, reading, and teaching.

Upcoming Events:

  1. Dear Friend. This is my only class scheduled in 2021, so if you’ve been interested in taking a class with me, do check it out!  I’m co-teaching a four-week workshop on Thursday afternoons (1:00-2:30 PM ET via Zoom) this May on epistolary forms with poet and essayist Holly Wren Spaulding. You can learn more and register for the course here.
  2. I’ll be in conversation with Holly about manuscript-making and her recent book, Familiars, next Monday, 4/5/21 at Writers & Books at 7:30 PM. Register here to attend and see Holly and me in action.

News & Recent Events:

  1. The LA Times  recently published A Reading Guide on the Asian American Experience curated by Viet Thanh NguyenCharles YuVictoria Chang, and several Asian American Studies scholars. This is a comprehensive list, more varied than many I’ve seen, and I was honored to have my book included. Please take a look at the entire guide and share with friends.
  2. This Is One Way to Dance was selected as a finalist for the Forward INDIES awards in the Adult Nonfiction Multicultural category. Yay!
  3. TIOWTD was chosen as SUNY Geneseo’s 2021-2022 Common Read. Really thrilled students, professors, and staff will be reading these essays together.
  4. Lit Hub published my conversation with Eula Biss, Danielle Evans, and Christa Parravani (hosted and moderated by Michele Filgate in her Red Ink Series), “On Making Choices in a Writing Career.”

What I’ve Been Reading:

Anjali Enjeti’s Southbound, a new book of essays about multiracial identity, growing up in the South, and social change. Southbound is being published by University of Georgia Press and feels like a kind of cousin to my book. If you enjoyed This Is One Way to Dance, please consider pre-ordering Southbound. They are very different essays than mine and these stories of growing up and activism are needed right now.

Please write with your news and what you’re reading, if you are so inclined!

Warmly,

Sejal
